In order to spread understanding about the beauty of classical Chinese art, Chunghwa Post has selected works of Giuseppe Castiglione for a series of two stamps sets: "Immortal Blossoms of an Eternal Spring." The series will have a total of 16 stamps, eight in each set.
Castiglione was an Italian who came to China in 1715 as a missionary. He leveraged his talents as a painter to gain an appointment to the court. He blended Western and Chinese techniques and was particularly adept at painting flowers and birds. The paintings in the series feature flowers in all seasons and gorgeously colored. The scenes are richly detailed and the compositions are well balanced. These works are true masterpieces of blended Western and Chinese painting. The first set in the series includes eight stamps: "Tree Peonies" (NT$5), "Peach Blossoms" (NT$5), "Herbaceous Peonies" (NT$7), "Flowering Crab Apple and Magnolia Blossoms" (NT$9), "Corn Poppies and Fringed Iris" (NT$10), "Yellow Prickly Roses and Peonies" (NT$10), "Carnations" (NT$12) and "Cherries and Grosbeaks" (NT$12). The works were exquisitely colored and innovative in terms of their techniques and compositions.
