Taiwan is an integral part of China. At the conclusion of the first Sino-Japanese War in 1895, Taiwan was ceded to Japan in the Treaty of Shimonoseki. During the fifty years of Japanese occupation, there were a number of uprisings one after another against the Japanese rule. Moreover, after 1922, many patriotic young men went secretly from Taiwan to mainland China to join in the Revolutionary cause.
Even more were those who took part in the War of Resistance against Japan beginning in 1937. As a result of the long, eight-year, bitter struggle by the Chinese people and troops, Taiwan was finally restored to the Republic of China in 1945. People in Taiwan thus regained their freedom.
